Christian Nudism?

I had a very difficult time swallowing this one: Christian nudists to build village in Florida

Okay, I didn’t even come close to swallowing, I spit it out. Hurled that sucker across the room. Covered the bottom of the bucket. Spewed it clear.

I’m still trying to figure out how nudism, or “naturism” as they prefer to call it, doesn’t violate Biblical standards. Maybe they can write me a concise, footnoted article explaining their view, with Biblical support (or in this case, lack of).

Let’s just hope that it won’t be, uh, bare of evidence. I would hate to clothe the issue with sarcasm. So let’s skip the preliminaries and get down to the skin of the matter. I just want the naked truth.

Right. A quick concise philosophical statement. Quite simply, God created us naked. We are not born clothed. Man clothes us. He was angered when we clothed ourselves, having committed the sin of knowledge. If we can see being naked not as a lustful experience, but as rejoicing as we were made to be BY God, we can cast off the veil put on us by man. However, it must be done in the attitude of such, and not as an exhibition to others. If you CAN’T see that, then, no, public nudity is not for you. If you CAN, it is. Shame in our creation is what The Lord was upset at. Remember what he said to Adam? “WHO TOLD YOU YOU WERE NAKED?” What I believe was deleted is “I MADE YOU THAT WAY!”

    In fact, try this.
Yes, I realize it’s from witchvox, but as I read it it explained it well.

What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize the fact that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful that the garment with which it is clothed?

    Indeed, Peter, indeed.

How about backing that up with Scripture, folks? Until then you’re just spouting self-deluded hogwash.

I’m neither for not against nudism, but the truth is, nowhere in the Bible does it condemn nor support non-sexual nudity — the ideal of nudism/naturism (I say ideal because some do misuse and pervert it). In many cases, it simply states that nudity was part of the situation. Based on this, including the fact that Jesus Himself hung on the cross naked, we know that nudity, even “social” nudity, by itself is not a sin.

Either way, I believe Romans 14 is the best scripture to apply to this topic, as it addresses “disputable matters.” For instance, verses 13 and 14 are perfect for this: “Let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that NOTHING is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.”

Steve, if you are truly interested in knowing more about nudism (I highly doubt), particularly how it “doesn’t violate Biblical standards”, it is up to you to do the research. Do not expect others to simply give you the answers or to try to prove anything to you. It is not up to others to prove it right or wrong for you. It is up to you to decide for yourself based on facts, not your opinions or assumptions.

If you are not aware, there is plenty of good material out there by genuine believers that will help you reconcile the issues. The best would be Fig Leaf Forum, as it is dedicated to this very pursuit. See http://www.figleafforum.com/

A good, very thorough e-book on the subject is The Bible, Society and Nudity, A study of social nudity from a Biblical and secular perspective, by Jeff Rockel

I personally invite you to examine why you even bothered to post this. Are you genuinely interested in knowing the truth about the matter, or is there another motive? Proverbs 18:2 says,”Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.”

Finally, I will offer some scriptural support… “Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame” (Genesis 2:25). “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). “We are God’s handiwork..” (Ephesians 2:10) and “…everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving” (1 Timothy 4:4). Jesus Himself said it is not what you see that causes you to sin, but what you do with what you see. “…the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them” (Matthew 15:18-20). Likewise, simply going nude.

I hope that helps brother. May the Lord bless you and keep you! In Jesus name!
